54 - Midvale Ousts Mineral City 74-61 (2-18-54)

Wil Di Genova is the Midvale Blue Devils' scrappy Senior Guard .  The 5-5 mite was a fill-in on last year's outstanding ball club and has been one of the main-strays of this year's contingent.  Wil is one of the Blue Devils' top scorers this year.  He scored 14 points last night against the Mineral City Tigers.

Bob Sourers is the Mineral City Tigers' 5-8 Senior Guard at Mineral City.  Bob, a 2-year veteran, is described as the best ball handler on the Tiger Squad and is a good defensive man.  He has helped the Tigers tremendously in the play-making and defensive side of the game.  He hit the nets for 10 markers against the Midvale Blue Devils last night's Consolation Division game.

DOVER - In an exciting 2nd Consolation Divison game of the night, the Mineral City Tigers (0-2) (6-11) (12-49) spotted the Midvale Blue Devils (1-1) (8-13) (59-28) an early lead, but the Tigers began growling with conviction in the 3rd stanza and finally pulled into a tie in the last canto and then the Blue Devils ran into a "hot" streak and pulled far ahead in the last 4 mintues.  The Diablos' zone defense kept the Cats to but one field goal as the lid was clamped down tightly on the Mineral City offense.  The Tigers of Head Coach Bob Penrod tallied 2 action shots in the 1st quarter with Senior center Gene Argento pacing the team with 7 free throw shots in 9 attempts.

Head Coach Bob Singerman experimented with several different combinations and the Mineral City Tigers pulled to within 3 points near the end of the half.  Midvale had stepped out in front 22-14 at the close  of the initial quarter and still retained the 8-point advantage, 36-28 at halftime.  The Tigers kept pecking away.  The 3rd stanza saw the Cats rap the Blue Devils hard as they came to within 3-points (52-49) at the close of the canto.  Backed by the crowd, which sensed an upset in the making, Mineral City continued to pour on the coal and deadlocked the count at 54-54 as 5-8 Senior guard Bob Souers racked up his 4th long set shot early in the quarter.

The score was tied once more at 55-55 before Sophomore forward Larry Swinderman, Junior center Ron Weaver and Wil Di Genova began to get "hot" and cooled off the Tiger bid for victory.  Weaver ended up with 18 points, tops for the Diablos, while Di Genova got 14 and Ed Krocker ended up with 15 markers for the winners.  Midvale played without the services of veteran Senior forward Dave Martin, who received a severe blow on the eye-last Tuesday night, the resulting wound needing 3 stitches.
