54 - Baltic Checks Sugarcreek-Shanesville 78-62 (2-18-54)

Senior Guard Andy Hoffman (8) and 6-3 Junior Center Errol Jacobs of the Baltic Eagles look on inquiringly, while their teammate Senior Forward Tom Ott (14) scrambles for the ball with Forward Paul Snyder, Senior Center Bill Ray and Senior Guard Jim Spahr of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates in last night's county tournament basketball game won by the Eagles last night.

Wayne Everhart, 5-11 Senior guard, has been one of the steady cogs in the Baltic Eagles' sparkling record this season.  A member of last year's Reserve Team, Wayne stepped into the picture and earned a starting berth for the Eagles.  Everhart lit-up the hoops for 25 important points against the Pirates.

Junior Guard Bill Pfister is the veteran floorman of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  Bill, who missed 3 games because of an arm injury, came back to give a good accounting of himself out front in the ball-handling department.  Pfister is 4th man on the team in the scoring department scoring 9 points in last night's game against the Baltic Eagles.

DOVER - The Baltic Eagles glided into the semi-finals bracket opposite the Tuscarawas Broncos last night by scuttliing the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 78-62 in the feature game of the evening at Memorial Hall last night.  The Stone Creek Golden Panther's clawed their way to victory over the Bolivar Cardinals 64-54 to oust the Red Birds from the tournament, while the Mineral City Tigers were also chased by the Midvale Blue Devils 74-61

With last night's action, the County Class B Tournament will recess until Saturday night when the lone Championship tussle on the card pits the Gnadenhutten Indians against the undefeated Strasburg Tigers at 9:00.  The Golden Panthers and Blue Devils come back into action in the Consolation Bracket at 7:45 and the Dundee Bulldogs will tackle the Pirates in the opening fracas at 6:30.

Propelled by the scoring thrusts of Senior forward Tom Ott and Senior guard Wayne Everhart, the Baltic Eagles (2-0) (18-3) (29-47) led from the very outset of the contest.  The Eagles soared to a 16-point lead in the 2nd frame and matched the swashbuckling Pirate attack in the 2nd half basket for basket.  The standing-room-only crowd saw the 2 squads battle almost evenly in the 1st quarter with the Birds holding a 6-point lead on 2 separate occasions.  The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-1) (55-39) shaved that lead down to 2 points at the end of the period.

Baltic solved the Buc's man-for-man defense in the 2nd canto and with control of both boards, raced to a big advantage at halftime 40-24.  Ott, Everhart and Junior center Errol Jacobs engineered the 22-point spree, while the Pirates, at a decided height disadvantage, managed only 3 field goals, all by Senior forward Max Miller.  That period was the winning one.  The Eagles flashed brightly at the outset of the 3rd stanza and pulled away to a 19-point advantage.  Senior center Bill Ray began to find the range; however, and the Pirates' big gun led an assault that pared one point from the Bird's lead.

Ott and Everhart were the chief point-getters for Baltic in the 3rd frame.  They repeated in the 4th to spark the Eagles to a 20-point lead at one stage in the canto with Miller once again whittling down the count for the Bucs.  The Pirates lost Junior guard Bill Pfister midway in the final stanza and Ray shortly after with Jacobs of Baltic chased near the end of the fray, all on personal fouls.  Ott had 26 markers for the Eagles and Everhart's driving play brought in 25 more, while Ray connected for 21 and Miller for 22 for the Pirates.
