54 - Coming Up!

Referee Paul Whyte of Hubbard is pictured in action as he posts his lanky frame on the Memorial Hall floor and levels an accusing finger at a player who has just committed a personal foul.  Paul will be on deck at the local basketball court along with Howard Knutsen of Steubenville for the 20th Annual Consolation Division and 32nd Championship finals of the Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament.  Drawings for the Class B Sectional Tournament to be held in Memorial Hall starting next Wednesday, will be held at Helmkamp's Restaurant here Sunday.

DOVER - The Port Washington Purple Riders (1-0) and Baltic Eagles (2-0), tagged as underdogs in the semi-finals round of the 32nd Annual Tuscarawas County Class B cage tournament, will be shooting for upset victories over the Strasburg Tigers (2-0) and Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0), respectively, when the meet resumes action at Memorial Hall tonight.  Head Coach Bray Toot, whose Purple Riders tangle with the undefeated (23-0) Bengal crew in the nightcap tonight, has had a full week to plot strategy for an upset bid and the veteran mentor is expected to unveil a plan aimed at trampling Strasburg, currently ranked 5th in the State's Class B galaxy.

The Tigers will be searching for victory No 24 in succession when they tangle with Port, who lost a 75-45 decision to Head Coach Don Martin's cagers early in the season when Senior forward Ken Huston played, but 2 minutes because of an injury.  Coach Martin; meanwhile, is plotting a defense aimed at stopping Port Washington, who has been hurdling all opponents with a high-geared offensive in the last few games.

In the 1st semi-final contest, Baltic's Eagles will have their claws sharpened for revenge against the Tuscarawas Broncos who pinned a humiliating 86-63 defeat on them in the last game of the season.  Head Coach Tom Bellville's charges saw their offense riddled by a pressing defense on the Broncos' floor.  Tusky is expected to throw the same defense up against the Eagles tonight.  The contest should be a crowd pleaser all the way.

The preliminary tussle is slated to get underway at 6:30.  The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) go up against the Gnadenhutten Indians (0-1) in a Consolation Division battle.  Doors to Memorial Hall will open at 5:30.
