58 - Tonight Decides Sectional Tournament Participates












DOVER - The County Tournament warfare resumes tonight at Dover's Memorial Hall with 2 berths in next week's Class A Sectional Tournament riding on the outcome.  The opening contest at 7:30 pairs the Midvale Blue Devils and the Garaway Pirates, while the nightcap will be played by the Gnadenhutten Indians and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers.

In addition to advancing to the Sectional fracas the 2 winners will return to the hall on Saturday night at 8:00 to vie for the Tournament Championship and The Daily Reporter Trophy.  Other awards also will be made at the conclusion of the contest.  The Sectional starts at Memorial Hall on Tuesday with the drawings on Sunday at Helmkamp's Restaurant here.  In addition to the local tourney winners the field will include the Berlin Panthers and the Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs from Holmes County, who meet for the County Tournament Crown at Millersburg on Saturday in which the winners of the Carroll County Tournament and the automatic qualifiers...Dover St. Joseph Ramblers, Dennison St. Mary Blue Wave, Dennison Railroaders and the Millersburg Knights.

More than 1,700 fans are expected to see tonight's clashes here.  The Blue Devils of Midvale, County League Champions, will put a 17-2 record against the Pirates of Garaway, which has a 12-10 record, including tournament wins over the Strasburg Tigers and Tuscarawas Valley Trojans.  The Diablos advanced to the semi-finals with a triumph over the Port Washington Purple Riders.  The Indians, 2nd-place finisher in the League race, has won 16 of 21 games, including a tournament verdict over the Tuscarawas Broncos. The Golden Panthers, which tied the Trojans for 3rd Place in the League, has a 13-8 record with a tourney decision over the Baltic Eagles.

During the regular season, the Devils defeated the Corsairs 71-66 and Gnaden beat the Golden Panthers 57-51 and 64-41.  The Tribesmen are the defending Tournament Champions, having whipped the Panthers in last year's final.  The Blue and Gold Midvale cagers won last year's Consolation Division Crown and then copped the Regional Championship on its way to the State semi-finals.  Because of a smaller field this year there is no Consolation Division in the present Classic.
