58 - Round Three!

DOVER - This county's representatives in next week's 36th Annual Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament at Dover's Memorial Hall will be decided by tomorrow night's semi-finals of the classic.  The Midvale "Devilish" Blue Devils, tournament favorites, will meet the Garaway "Swashbuckling" Pirates at 7:30 and the Gnadenhutten "Whooping It-Up" Indians, defending Tournament Champions, will tangle with the Stone Creek "Wild-Cat" Golden Panthers at 8:45.

The Hall doors will open at 6:30 and the 3rd consecutive capacity attendance is anticipated.  Winners of the 2 contests not only will qualify for Sectional Tournament play beginning next Tuesday, but also will collide on Saturday night at 8:00 for the Championship and The Daily Reporter Trophy.

The Blue Devils, also defending Regional Tournament Champions, whipped the Pirates 71-66 on January 28th.  Considering the Diablos were on their own court then and still won by only 5 points they may have their hands full tomorrow night.  The Pirates knocked the Strasburg Tigers out of the running in their 1st tournament start 72-63 and then made the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans walk the plank 43-34. Thus some of the figure filberts consider tomorrow night's encounter a tossup.  The Devils now have a 17-2 record and the Corsairs are 12-10.

The Golden Panthers would like nothing better than a victory over the Indians.  The same clubs met for the tournament toga last year and the Tribesmen won 75-66.  During the campaign just closed the Tribe scalped the Panthers 57-51 and 64-41 and went on to finish 2nd behind Midvale in the County League chase.  The Stone Creek Golden Panthers, led by Rod Reinhart, the county's leading scorer, spanked the Baltic Eagles 75-67 in its tournament start with Reinhart getting 33 points.  The Gnadenhutten Indians turned back the Tuscarawas Broncos 63-59 in its debut.  The Golden Panthers now are 13-8 and Gnaden is 15-5.

Good luck to all!
