58 - Round Two!








DOVER - The Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament resumes tonight at 7:30 in Dover's Memorial Hall when the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans make their debut against the Garaway Pirates.  Filling out the quarter-final card will be the Gnadenhutten Indians-Tuscarawas Broncos battle, the 1st for both teams.

The Indians have one of the best well-balanced teams in the county with 3 players averaging over 12 points per game.  Over the seasonal route the Tribesmen had 14 victories and 5 losses and finished 2nd in the League, behind the Midvale Blue Devils, with a 6-2 record.  Losses were to the Baltic Eagles 68-64 and to the Blue Devils 63-53.  Leading Head Coach Dick Scott's Tribe will be Ron Bradley, who is scoring at a 16.8 clip per game, having totaled 335 over the season.  Right behind him is Larry Clark, who has scored 311 points or an average of 15.6.  Tom Roth has tallied 258 points for an average of 12.9.

The Broncos will carry a season's record of 6-11 into the game.  In 8 League games it won only once and finished 7th.  Head Coach Stan Culp's Riders are being led by Sophomore Gary Caviness, one of the leading point-makers in the county with 305 for 16 contests an average of 19.1.  Tom Vesco has totaled 274 points or 17.1 per game.

Bob Heller will be making his initial appearance as Head Coach in the tournament when he sends the Trojans against the Pirates, which beat the Strasburg Tigers on Thursday.  In his 1st year at the  Tuscarawas Valley helm, Heller's team compiled an 11-5 record and was tied with the Stone Creek Golden Panthers for 3rd place in the League with each squad having a 5-3 record.  Ben Price, who is the tallest man in the tournament at 6-5 paces the Trojan offense.  He has totaled 239 points in only 14 games for an average of 17.1.  Wayne Ruof is next with a 13.5 average, having scored 202 points in 15 contests.

Winners of tonight's tilts will advance to the semi-finals next Thursday.  Winner of the Tuscarawas Valley-Garaway game will collide with the Diablos in the opener at 7:30, while the victor in the Gnadenhutten-Tuscarawas tilt will oppose the Golden Panthers in the nightcap at 8:45.
