The wildly-screaming students are from Garaway and they had reason to be delirious.  Their Pirates were defeating the Mighty Strasburg Tigers 72-63 in last night's tournament game when Daily Reporter Photographer Ralph McKee snapped the photo.

DOVER - The Garaway Pirates' accuracy at the free throw line spelled victory over the Strasburg Tigers.  The Pirates cashed 26 of 33 charity tosses for 78.8 percent, while the Tigers could only garner 9 of 16.  From the field it was a different story as the Bengals clicked for 26 to the Corsairs' 23.  During the season, the Pirates of Garaway came away with a 10-point victory against the Tigers of Strasburg 56-46 for their 6th victory of the year.

The 2 teams battled to a 13-13 deadlock in the 1st period, but the Strasburg Tigers (0-1) (4-4) (11-8) forged a small lead of 2 or 3 points.  However, the Garaway Pirates (1-0) (4-4) (11-10) pulled even at 33-33 as halftime arrived.  Opening the 3rd quarter, 6-0 Sophomore center Chuck Stengel of the Pirates hit on a free throw shot and from that point on the Corsairs were in the lead; although, never by more than 4 points.  They outscored the Cats 13 to 9 in that period which ended 46-42.

The final frame saw the Pirates of Garaway  gain its biggest lead of the night, 60-49, with 3:30 remaining.  The Garaway Pirates outpointed the Tigers 26-21 and won going away.  Head Coach Jim C. Stull's Garaway crew had 4 starters in double figures.  Stengel caged only 3 field goals, and hit for 11 free throws for 17 points and his teammate Senior forward Bill Slemmer had the same total on 7 action shots and 3 charity tosses.  Junior guard Larry Yakely was right behind them with 16 and Sophomore guard Koran Zehnder managed 12.

Pacing the Bengles were the 2 Haswell brothers, Bob (Senior forward) and Nick (Junior guard) and Senior center Chuck Burris.  Bob was the leader with 18 points on 7 field goals and 4 free throw tosses, while Nick picked up 17 and Burris 15.
