56 - Midvale Routs Dundee 97-55 (2-18-56)

While teammate Senior Larry Swinderman grabs the leather, the Midvale Blue Devils' Junior Lonnie Wolfe looks like he's playing the game of" London Bridge is Falling Down," but actually he was attempting to keep from piling on another teammate, Junior Dick Leggett and the Dundee Bulldogs' Senior Neil Potts in the background at the left is 6-4 Senior Don Levengood, Bulldog center.  The Blue Devils Club topped the Pups 97-55 to enter the semi-finals.  (The Daily Reporter Photo by Thiele)

DOVER - The stage was set for semi-final scuffles in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament at Dover's Memorial Hall Saturday night when the 2nd-seeded Midvale Blue Devils exploded a 37-goal attack as it bombed the Dundee Bulldogs 97-55.  The win put the Blue Devils against the Port Washington Purple Riders in one of the 2 semi-final games scheduled to be run off tomorrow night.

After the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates tangles with the Bulldogs in a Consolation Division Bracket game at 6:30, the unbeaten Strasburg Tigers clash with the Gnadenhutten Indians in the 1st regular bracket semi-final.  The Diablos and the Purple Riders will square off at 9:00.  The victors of the 2 semi-final frays will fight it out for the Championship on Saturday night.  The titular tilt will be preceded by the Consolation Division final at 7:30.

In the Consolation Division Bracket Saturday night the Stone Creek Golden Panthers eliminated the Bolivar Cardinals 85-63 and the Pirates put out the Mineral City fire 60-54.  The Golden Panthers will return to action against the Strasburg-Gnaden loser at 7:30 Thursday night.

The Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) (16-5) (64-30), scorching the strings on 54 percent of its shots...many of them from up close as the Blue Devils found the Dundee Bulldogs (1-1) (4-18) (32-52) whose defense was vulnerable to driving layups...was given trouble by the spunky Bulldogs for only one quarter as they came up with a sensational shooting display before a near-capacity turnout.  The Dialos hiked out to a 6-0 lead, but the white-shirted Pups tied the count on free throws by 6-4 Senior center Don Levengood and Senior forward Bob Walter before the Devils took the lead for keeps.

Junior John Colombo, slight-built Blue and Gold forward, waxed hot with 5 field goals in the 1st 8 minutes and Midvale led 22-15 going into the 2nd frame during which the taller Blue Devils rammed in 13 of 21 action attempts.  It was forward Larry Swinderman, the county's 4th highest scorer who led the torrid pace.  The Senior mite bagged 5 goals with red-haired Junior Dick Leggett garnering 3.  The Diablos' fast-break and superior board strength started the Devils rolling and the one-sided action continued even after the Devils Head Coach Pete Hillard began to use his subs.

But before the regulars left they made 9 of 15 shots in the 3rd round, which ended at 79-41.  Both teams Hillard and Head Coach Jack Reese of Dundee deployed their Reserves in the last canto and a Midvale Sub, Freshman Dave Belknap wound up with 10 points in the 2nd half.  Swinderman finished with 20 points as did Columbo and the Bulldog's Senior Don Levengood who made a dozen free throws.  Leggett bagged 15 and John Beans 14, while the only other Pup scoring in double digits was Senior Al Dildine.  He made 11, Dundee's 19 field goals came in 70 shots.
