33 - Gnaden Blows Out New Cumberland 49-27 (2-23-33)

DOVER - The New Cumberland Trojans (0-1) (0-2), playing its 2nd Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament game ever, was eliminated by the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (13-8) with a score of 49-27, but succeeded in winning the respect of other tournament teams in the game.  The score indicates a rather one-sided game, but the opposition given the Indians by the losers was more powerful than their 27 points reflect.  With ordinary shooting luck the newcomers would have made a real game out of the contest.  They rimmed a great majority of their shots.

The Indians took a 7-3 lead in the opening period and was ahead 20-6 at halftime.  They piled to their total to lead 36-14 at the 3rd quarter mark.  Senior Bob Kennedy, pot-hanging Gnaden forward, led the scoring with 16 points counted on half as many buckets.  His brother, Sophomore forward and Junior guard Melvin Struchen tied for 2nd high honors with 12 points apiece.  Nemetz and R. Shaffer were high for the Trojans with 10 markers each.
