31 - Fan Basketball Favorites For 1931

DOVER - The Daily Reporter basketball trophy, to be presented to the winner of the annual county tournament here Friday and Saturday, is on display at the Ress Brothers Cigar Store on Factory Street.  The Gnadenhutten Indians, winners of The Daily Reporter Trophy last season and with every player from last year's team eligible, is again one of the prime favorites to cop.  The Strasburg Tigers, undisputed Champions of the League with 9 consecutive victories and not a defeat, is considered one of the strongest teams entered.  So too are the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, which finished 2nd to Strasburg in the league race, the Midvale Blue Devils and the Dundee Bulldogs.

One of the most crucial battles of the entire tourney comes on Friday night when Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville tangle at 7 o'clock before what is expected to be a packed house.  This game is regarded as championship stuff and the winner will probably find it necessary to put forth every effort to win.  Gnadenhutten may find opposition in the Tuscarawas Broncos, a team that has developed rapidly as the season advanced.  These two meet at 4PM, Friday.  The Bolivar Cardinals, regarded as a tournament threat, opens the annual affair at 2PM, Friday against the Mineral City Tigers.  Midvale plays the Port Washington Purple Riders at 3PM.  The other opening day tilt will pit the Baltic Eagles against Dundee at 8PM, Friday.  The semi-finals are slated for 2 and 3PM.  The championship tilt will be played at 8:30PM, Saturday.

Admission prices for the tournament at 20 and 35 cents for afternoons and 25 and 50 cents for evening sessions.  Earl "Monk" Gross, popular official of New Philadelphia, will handle all tournament games.  J. A. Selzer, Bolivar, conducted the most successful county tournament last year and is expecting even bigger results this time around.
