31 - 9th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament







DOVER - The "tapering-off" process used to put athletes on edge for stiff competition, was in full sway in 10 Tuscarawas County Class B high schools today as coaches prepared their basketballers for the county tournament at Legion Hall next Friday and Saturday, the winner and runner-up of which will represent the county league in the District Tournament at the same hall on March 6th and 7th.  Earl "Monk" Gross, popular New Philadelphia official who has been chosen referee, will start hostilities with a toot from his whistle at 2PM on Friday, the time the Bolivar Cardinals and the Mineral City Tigers are scheduled to meet in the opening game of a new fight for The Daily Reporter basketball trophy.  A.C. Bahler of Sugarcreek and H. P. Bohman of Strasburg have been appointed official tourney scorers and W. S. Fagley of Bolivar and Vernon Conradi of Midvale will time the contests.

For the benefit of players and school officials, Harry S. Harbaugh, Dover dry cleaner, has equipped a check room which will be operated free.  Tournament rules laid down today were:

1.  Teams not ready to play when scheduled will forfeit their game.
2.  All teams will be given a 10 minute practice period before their game.  Practicing at any other time is strictly forbidden.
3.  Following the opener between Bolivar and Mineral City, the Midvale Blue Devils and the Port Washington Purple Riders will compete in the 1st round at 3PM on Friday.  At 4PM, the Gnadenhutten Indians will take the floor against the Tuscarawas Broncos.

The arch-enemies of the entire tournament will meet at 7PM Friday.  They are the Strasburg Tigers, winners of the County League Title and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, holders of 2nd place in the same race.  This game was originally scheduled for the afternoon, but was transferred to the evening because of the great interest manifested.  The Baltic Eagles meet the Dundee Bulldogs at 8PM Friday, following will be the winner of the Bolivar-Mineral City game who plays the winner of the Midvale-Port Washington game at the end of the 2nd round.  The semi-finals will begin at 2PM Saturday with the final being played off at 8:30PM.
