44 - Strasburg Hammers Gnaden 47-27 (2-17-44)

Gnadenhutten Indians High School Cheerleaders for 1944:  Jane Miller - Donna Rice and Jean Kohl.

DOVER - Although the Gnadenhutten Indians (0-1) (33-24) (10-11) split even in a 20-game schedule during the season, the Indians won 10 of their last 14 games and were considered a "comer" with a good chance to upset 1st-Year Head Coach Emmet Riley's Tigers (1-0) (56-15), one of the pre-tourney favorites.

But, the Tigers, sparked by Juniors forward Don Neidenthal and guard Jack Reiger, outscored the Indians in every period and won going away.  Neidenthal accounted for 15 of the Strasburg points and Reiger contributed another 13, with 11 of them going through the hoops in the 2nd half.  Junior Bill Martin, verteran Gnadenhutten forward, carried the brunt of the Gnaden attack and came out with individual honors on 16 points.  Every player on the Strasburg squad scored at least 3 points.

The Bengals took an early lead and were never headed; although, the Indians tied the score at 4 and trailed only 11-9 at the close of the 1st period.  Strasburg shot ahead 21-13 in the 2nd stanza and increased their margin to 35-18 in the third quarter.  The victory qualified Strasburg to tangle with the winner of the Tuscarawas Broncos-Bolivar Cardinals contest in the top attraction on Saturday night's card.
