44 - Port Upends Stone Creek 36-31 (2-17-44)

DOVER - Tuscarawas County's 22nd Annual Class B Basketball Tournament opened at Memorial Hall last night with 4 of the 11 participating teams advancing in the brackets, while their quartet of foes, all vanquished, turned in their tracks for the long struggle through the Consolation Division.  Before a crowd of some 1,500 fans of who 1,175 paid admissions, the Strasburg Tigers, Tuscasrawas Broncos, Midvale Blue Devils and the Port Washington Purple Riders returned triumphant in their 1st assignments and won the right to continue in the competition for the County Championship and The Daily Reporter Trophy.

The crowd practically assured the financial success of the tournament, according to County School Supt. W.E. Laws, Tournament Manager.  The 1,175 paid admissions compared with 569 at the opening session of last year's event which drew only 3,104 cash customers throughout its entire program.

Last nights scores:

Midvale 34 - Baltic 21
Strasburg 47 - Gnaden 27
Tusky 48 - Bolivar 35
Port 36 - Stone Creek 31

The red hot shooting of the Midvale Blue Devils and the ease with which Strasburg turned back the Blue Devils were features of last night's games; although, a rough and close Port-Stone Creek tussle bidded for a share of the limelight.

Except for a short time in the 2nd quarter, the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-0) (7-26) and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (0-1) (10-21) played a game that was a tight race for the wire.  Although the Purple Riders led most of the distance, the advantages of the Riders were never enough to ice the contest.  Guard R. Kugler's shooting kept the Panthers in the running at every stageof the contest as he collected 7 field goals and a pair of free throws for 16 points and securing game honors.

The rivals battled to an 8-8 tie in the opening period, but in the early minutes of the 2nd Port Washington boosted their advantage to 17-9.  There Stone Creek settled down.  Kugler scored 3 quick baskets and forward B. Kugler another to knot the count at 17.  Port went on to lead 20-18 at the half, but their big edge was gone and they never regained it.  The Purple Riders led 30-25 at the 3-quarter mark.  Senior Blaine Gilmore tallied 14 points to lead the Port Washington scorers, while Junior forward Clarence Linard contributed 12 and Senior Ray Ludwig cashed in 10 points to the cause.
