39 - Midvale Escapes...Sherrodsville 30-29 (3-2-39)

Midvale Blue Devils Senior Center Bill Stevenson, the team's ace scorer, dropped in 14 points on 5 field goals and 4 free throws in gaining game honors as the Blue Devils just got by the Sherrodsville Rockets 30-29.

DOVER - A mediocre 1st half robbed the Sherrodsville Rockets (19-4) of a victory over the Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) (16-7), but it took a field goal in the last few seconds by substitute forward Stafford to give the Blue Devils its 30-29 victory.

Midvale, with Senior forward Big Bill Stevenson clicking regularly, piled up a 9-3 advantage at the 1st quarter and increased it to 19-10 at the half, while the Rockets, getting numerous good shots at the basket, failed to hit on a regular basis.  But, as the 2nd half started, Sherrodsville tossed a man-to man defense on the floor and right then and there Midvale's superiority ceased.

Stevenson couldn't get open nor could his teammates get a good set shot at the basket and when the 3rd stanza was ended the Carroll County team was behind 23-20.  At the start of the final period, Carroll, stocky Sherrodsville forward, dropped 3 action shots and pushed the Rockets into a 29-25 lead with 3 minutes to go.

Baldwin dropped in an action shot for Midvale and forward Frank Morrison a free throw to pull the Blue Devils within one point, but time was going fast and only 10 seconds remained when Stafford attempted a shot from under the basket.  His arm was knocked down by Carroll, but the ball went straight up in the air, bobbled crazily and dropped in to put Midvale in the lead.  Stafford missed the free throw he was awarded on the play.  Defeat for Sherrodsville was even more bitter for in the last few seconds, the Rockets guard Kick hurled a long shot which hit the bankboard, dipped around the hoop and fell off.

Stevenson's 14 points, 13 of which were made in the 1st half, led the scoring for both teams, while Carroll of Sherrodsville was next with 10 points.  Midvale missed 10 of 16 free throws and Sherrodsville 6 of 11.
