37 - Midvale Slams South Amherst 42-26 (3-18-37)

Midvale Blue Devils Senior Forward Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel) scored 18 points (6 field goals and 6 free throws) in leading his team as they clobbered the South Amherst Falcons 42-26) while picking up game honors.

COLUMBUS - The South Amherst Falcons (25-2), who was hammered by the Midvale Blue Devils (9-1) (25-3) had one of the best records of any of the schools competing in the Class B Tournament, but the Blue Devils, led by Frank Baumholtz and forward John Hawkins, got it done in the 1st half of their contest.

With at least half of Midvale and a large section of New Philadelphia egging them on with a continued stream of cheers and yells, the Blue Devils stepped into a 23-9 lead in the 2nd period after being held to a 7-7 tie in the first.  Baumholtz zipped in 4 buckets and 3 foul tosses during the period and then followed up in lthe 2nd half with even more points to slice himself off 18 points and the game's individual scoring honors.  The victory may yet, prove costly to the Blue Devils as Baumholtz suffered a bad bump on one knee during the 1st half and was thrown on it again in the 2nd when he was deliberately tripped by Harold Brucker, South Amherst guard.  The game was held up for several minutes because of the injury.  Brucker was not banished from the game.

It wasn't a one-man show; however, for Hawkins was giving Baumholtz a chase for scoring honors and wound up with 14 points on 7 field goals.  The barrage the 2 forwards rained at the hoop in the last 3 quarters of the game completely panicked South Amherst and broke up its game completely.  Before the half ended, the Blue Devils were running the game very definitely along their own lines.  Midvale shot its lead to 31-13 before the final chukker opened and the Falcons started hittng the hoop with dizzy one-handed heaves from the corners.  Dizzy though they were, they served to double the Lorain County Champions count in the final period.  Head Coach M. R. Helwig of Midvale contributed a bit when he sent a full team of substitutes into the fray in the last few minutes.

Forward Al Jones paced South Amherst's attack with 10 points (5 field goals) and Joe Klimosewski was runner-up with 9 (4 field goals and a free throw).  While Baumholtz was stabbing 6 field goals and 6 free throws for Midvale and Hawkins was dumping in lhis 7 buckets, Freshman center Dick Belknap, hurt at the District final at Dennison last week, was picking up 6 markers (3 field goals) and guard Bill Stevenson 4 points on 2 field goals.  Belknap's ankle, injured in practice for the Dennison final, is in good shape, according to Coach Helwig.
