37 - Baumholtz 27 Points As Midvale Stops Bluffton 39-32 (3-19-37)

Midvale High School Blue Devils Senior Forward Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel) gains game honors by scoring a near record 27 points (11 field goals and 5 free throws) in leading the Blue Devils by beating back the Bluffton Pirates 39-32.

COLUMBUS - The State-wide recognition that has long been due Senior forward Frank Baumholtz came to him here last night as he fired 27 points through the hoops and pushed the Midvale Blue Devils (10-1) (26-3) into the semi-finals of the State Class B Basketball Tournament, carrying the standard of the Tuscarawas County's Class B League to the highest peak it has ever reached.  Midvale plays Lockland, which won 31-19 over Olmsted last night at 2PM this afternoon.

Baumholtz hailed as one of the greatest forwards, turned in his performance against Bluffton and Midvale won by a 39-32 count as the huge crowds in the stands wondered, admired and then marvelled at the dazzling performance of the scintillating forward.  Baumholtz's total was the 2nd highest ever recorded by one player in a single game of Class B competition at a tournament.  In 1934, Ron Peters of Lawrenceville scored 28 points.

Despite the great show, Midvale's chances for victory almost petered out in the 2nd period when Bluffton pulled up to within one point and guards Bill Stevenson and Dick Taylor of Midvale drew their 3rd personal fouls.  But, the Blue Devils drove in.  The 14-8 lead they had at the 1st quarter had been lost.  They set out to get a new one and at the end of the 3rd period had it as they led their competitors 31-23.

Midvale surged out in front almost immediately as Stevenson cut under the basket for a sucker shot and forward John Hawkins followed that up with one from the corner.  A moment later, Baumholtz hit the hoop with his 1st, a left-handed shot on the play, but missed the free throw.  All this before Bluffton made an appearance on the scoreboard with 2 points on a sucker shot by Kindle.  Then came 2 quick field goals by Baumholtz, one from under the hoop and the other from the zone line.  Leading 2-1, the Blue Devils slacked up and Bluffton jumped into the breach tallying 6 points before Midvale ended the quarter with a free throw by Baumholtz.  The Falcons made its bid in the 2nd period and pushed its count to 12 before Balumholtz gave his team a shove with 2 fielders, one from the four line and the other from the corner.  Bluffton, led by Kindle, rallied again, moved its score to 19 before Baumholtz hit again to wind up the Blue Devils' scoring for the period.  The count was 20-19.  One last stand in the opening minutes of the 3rd chukker was the best Bluffton could do.  Kindle matched Baumholtz's 1st bucket of the quarter, but could do nothing about the other 2, or the one foul, or the 2 baskets by Hawkins.  Midvale led 31-23 as the final period opened.

The Midvalers coasted from there.  Baumholtz scored only 6 points and Hawkins only two.  Kindle contributed 3 for Bluffton, while Kliewer shot one basket and Stonehill two.  The Baumholtz boxscore for the evening read 11 buckets and 5 fouls tosses and 3 missed free throws while only 1 personal foul.  Newsmen in the press box proclaimed him the best basketball player in the tournament regardless of class, which is a good indication that he will be named to one of the forward positions on the All-State Team when it is picked after the final games tonight.  John Hawkins popped 4 field goals for the Blue Devils and Stevenson got 2.  Belknap, at center, outplayed Reidenbach, despite the latter's 8 points and took complete charge after the Bluffton center fouled himself out of the game in the 2nd period trying to stop Baumholtz.
