50 - 28th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament 1950







DOVER - The Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament returns to Dover on Wednesday night after an absence of one year for a 7 night stand and season records of the 11 participating teams indicate one of the most interesting classics of them all.

The Baltic Eagles (1-9) and Port Washington Purple Riders (2-8) collide Wednesday at 6:30PM in Memorial Hall, launching a cage meet which will continue Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this eeek and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week.

Two of the seeded teams, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Strasburg Tigers, will see action Wednesday night.  The Pirates meet the Dundee Bulldogs at 7:45PM and the Tigers collide with the Bolivar Cardinals at 9PM.  The Bengals and Corsairs finished County League play in a tie for 2nd place with 8-2 records.  The Bulldogs, under 3rd-Year Head Coach Fritz Jacobs, had a 4-6 League record, while 2nd-Year Head Coach Warren Craigo's Red Birds posted a 5-5 mark in the conference.

The Midvale Blue Devils, defending tournament Champions (9-1) and winner of the County League title for 3 consecutive years, swing into action on Thursday at 8:45PM against the winner of the Baltic-Port battle. The District Champion Blue Devils are in the upper bracket with the Pirates and the Tuscarawas Broncos, the League's 3rd place team with a 7-3 mark.

The Stone Creek Golden Panthers, coached by 2nd-Year Ken Newlon, who finished the season with a 6-4 record, are in the lower bracket with 2nd-Year Head Coach Don Martin's Strasburg Tigers.  The Panthers see their 1st tournament actioni Thursday night when they clash with 3rd-Year Head Coach Ray Blickensderfer's Gnadenhutten Indians (4-6) at 7:30PM.

Three contests, 2 of them Consolation Division battles in which once-beaten quintets receive a 2nd and final chance to stay on the tournament trail, are scheduled for Friday night.

First-Year Head Coach Ray Clever's Tuscarawas Broncos, another of the seeded teams along with Stone Creek and Midvale, collide with the winner of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville-Dundee game Friday night at 9PM.  Mineral City, coached by former Muskingum College Star (Rich) L.R. Bonvechio (his 1st year at Mineral City), sees action for the 1st time Saturday night at 9PM against the winner of the Bolivar-Strasburg game.  The Tigers have a 1-9 mark in the conference.

Two other Consolation Division games are scheduled for Saturday night at 6:30PM and 7:45PM.  Semi-finals will be played February 22nd with the finals scheduled for Friday, February 24th.  Consolation semi-finals will be played February 23rd.

Three county teams, the winner, runner-up and Consolation winner, will advance to the Dover Sectional Tournament in March.  Tournament officials will be J.R. Dalyrmple and A.H. Nichol of Akron and Harold Simpson of Newark tournament manager W.R. Laws announced.  Trophies will be awarded to the 3 teams gaining berths in the Sectional Tournament.
