49 - Right Down The Line

Dover, Ohio

MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN about basketball officiating, but little has been done to improve the caliber of officials.  Officials Eric Calhoun, a Cleveland schoolteacher and Clyde Hall of Youngstown, gave a very questionable performance last night in the Regional Tournament at Kent State.

We do not mean to imply that officiating cost the Midvale Blue Devils the game with the North Canton Vikings.  Neither do we say it didn't.  When other competent officials, at the tournament as spectators only, come to you after a game and remark that the officiating is woefully incompetent, you know something is wrong.

Calhoun, a scholarly gentleman past 60, possesses one of the "slowest" whistles in the game today.  After watching that exhibition last night, we are of the opinion that someone with authority should do something!

All 4 teams suffered last night because of faulty officiating.  This isn't the 1st time this year that the officials have seemed to lose all contact with a ball game.  "The game is too fast" is a cry frequently heard.  If that is true, we say slow it down!

DISPITE ALL OF THIS, Midvale, with All-Ohio Senior forward Jack Ford in top shape, might have turned the trick last night.  Midvale was disorganized somewhat by Ford's weakness.  Enough to permit the North Canton quintet to hold him to 6 points.  That is a feat which hasn't happened all year.

THE WINNER AT KENT?  Right now, we would say Lowellville's Rockets are a good bet.  They certainly handled highly-touted Akron Eilet easily enough to rate the favorite's spot against North Canton Saturday night.

NOTE:  North Canton went on to the State semi-finals losing to Lockland Wayne 59-38.  Lockland Wayne then lost to Delphos St. Johns 47-43 in the final State game.
