46 - Strasburg Wins 4th District Championship 47-44 (3-9-46)

Photo above shows Captain Senior Forward John Garver and Head Coach Emmet Riley being presented with the team's individual charms for winning the District Championship over Tuscarawas 47-44 at Zanesville on Saturday night.  Tournament Manager Rolland Buxton (left) is doing the honors.  Both Strasburg and Tuscarawas got the individual charms and both teams will receive trophies later.

The Tigers' Senior Guard Fred Aul goes up for a high one exhibiting some of the reach Strasburg uses under the basket.  At the left is Senior Guard Joe Deibel of Strasburg and Senior Center Fred Walton of Tuscarawas, while Senior Forward John Vesco of Tusky and Junior Center Marvin Jeffers of Strasburg are in front of Aul.

ZANESVILLE - With their 4th District Championship safely tucked away and their string of straight victories extended to 27, the best record in the State, the Strasburg Tigers today were looking forward to meeting Wheelersburg on Friday night at Athens in the State Regional Class B Tournament with a crack at the State title at stake.  The Tigers, which this year won the Tuscaraws County Class B League and Tournament Championships, won the Eastern District Class B Title for the 4th time Saturday night at Zanesville Municipal Auditorium by defeating the Tuscarawas Broncos 47-44 before a crowd of 900 fans.

After a mixup yesterday, during which Adena drew for Strasburg, the Tigers will play at Athens and Head Coach Emmet Riley was there to draw for his team, getting Wheelersburg Friday at 9PM at Athens.  Worthington and Glenford play at 8PM.  The 2 winning teams will play Saturday night at 9PM for the Regional Championship.  There will also be a Consolation Division contest between the 2 Friday night losers to complete the card.

Wheelersburg has won 26 and lost 2 games and Glenford has won 26 and lost 4 games.  Officials are Lester Boyd of Lancaster and C.H. Jones of Wellston, the same men who refereed the Regional at Logan last year when Sugarcreek-Shanesville represented the District.

After eliminating Zanesville St. Thomas 61-50 Friday night, Coach Emmet Riley's undefeated Tigers went to take the District title from the Tuscarawas Broncos in a nip and tuck ball game which saw Strasburg leading all the way after the opening moments.  In eliminating Tusky, winner over Frazeysburg 63-47 Friday night, the Tigers took their 4th victory this year from the Broncos.  Strasburg won regular season contests 25-23 and 45-43, dropped Tusky into the Consolation of the county tournament by 31-16 and then turned in Saturday night's 47-44 triumph to wind up Tusky's season.

The Tuscarawas Broncos (8-2) (24-4)  battled every step of the way Saturday night, never giving up and only the better balances of the Strasburg cagers proved the Broncos' undoing.  The Strasburg Tigers (8-0) (27-0), in winning the game, exhibited a consistency found in few ball teams.  The Tigers played steadily and although personal fouls sent Tom Haswell out early in the 3rd quarter and kept Sophomore Center Clarence "Junior" Yackey on the bench part of the last half, they never became demoralized.

Tusky scored first, Walton opening up with his only field goal of the game, but Haswell soon tied it and then the Tiger offense, clean cut as always, started clicking and they ran up a lead of 13-4 before the Broncos could cut it to 14-8 at the 1st quarter.  The 2nd period saw Senior forward Rich Donahue and Vesco hitting for Tusky to out score Strasburg 16-14, but the Tigers were still ahead 28-24 at halftime.  Haswell and Yackey led Strasburg in that period with all 5 starters scoring.

Again in the 3rd stanza, Tuscarawas came back to outscore Strasburg 13 to 12 and when the whistle sounded theTigers were leading 40-37 going into the final quarter.  Garver hit a field goal for Strasburg, but Donahue made a basket and a free throw and the score was 42-40 in favor of the Bengals with 4 minutes to go.  Garver stepped into the action again then and slipped in 2 more field goals and Aul scored a free throw to ice the game 47-40.  Only 90 seconds remained when Donahue hit an action shot and Vesco slipped in Tusky's last basket to make the final score 47-44.

The Tigers outscored the Broncos 16-14 from the field, but Tusky sank 16 of 30 free throw shots, while Strasburg was making 15 of 26.  Garver and Yackey led the Tigers with 12 points apiece, but Haswell, who played only 20 of the 32 minutes, scored 10 before going out on fouls.  Aul and Deibel each collected 5, Senior forward Ed Gasser 2 and Junior center Marvin Jeffers 1 point.  Donahue and Vesco were Tusky's 2 big men, hitting 17 points apiece, while Walton, usually right up in there with the other two, was held to 7 points, leaving the game in the last 2 minutes on personal fouls.  Tusky also lost Junior guard Bill Dessecker on fouls in the 3rd quarter.

Official Ed Sherman and Nolan Swackhammer were calling them close, assessing Strasburg 21 personals and Tusky 18.  Following the game both teams were presented with individual medals by Tournament Manager Rolland Buxton, while both Strasburg and Tuscarawas will receive trophies from the Ohio High School Athletic Association at a later date.

NOTE:

TIGER STAR ILL, IN BED WITH COLD AFTER GAME

Sophomore Forward Tom Haswell of the Strasburg Tiger High School Basketball Team was stricken with a severe chest cold Saturday at Zanesville and was reported improved at his home today.  Haswell, who is in bed, played more than a half on Saturday night in the Tuscarawas game, racking up 10 points before he fouled his way out.

NOTE:

STRASBURG HOLDS COUNTY WIN RECORD

The Strasburg Tigers, in addition to winning the Eastern District Class B Tournament at Zanesville Saturday night, broke the winning streak record held by their old rivals, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  The Creekers in 1943-44 won 26 straight games before meeting defeat in the Regional Tournament, while Strasburg by winning over Tuscarawas 47-44 now has 27 straight.

NOTE:

WHO'S ON FIRST?...THIRD BASE!!!! (Abbott and Costello Routine)

While the average basketball fan was sitting back in his easy chair yesterday enjoying the victory his favorite team won, at least 2 of those favorite teams were scurrying all over Eastern Ohio trying to find out who they played in the Regional Tournament and where.  Result was that Strasburg's undefeated Tigers got in 2 tournaments and Adena, District winner at Steubenville, got in none...in fact the Adena delegation was cold shouldered, temporarily of course, out of the Younstown Regional.

Strasburg, with Head Coach Emmet Riley on his way to Athens and the State Highway Patrol out trying to stop him, drew Akron Ellet in the Youngstown tourney with Adena pulling it out of the hat for them, but Riley made it to Athens and drew Wheelersburg there for Friday at 9PM.  Adena, clear out of the tournaments, made the fact known and telephones over the State started buzzing, the harassed officials of the Ohio State High School Athletic Association finally deciding that Adena would play Akron Ellet at Younstown and Strasburg would play Wheelersburg at Athens Friday night.

After Coach Riley left for Athens yesterday morning for the drawings at Ohio University, Supt. G.W. Jeandrevin found out that Strasburg was to draw at Younstown and sent the highway patrol after Emmet, but it didn't work.  The patrol found him as hard to nail down as his basketball opponents have and he got through.  Meantime Adena was drawing for Strasburg at Youngstown and while the Tigers had plentyof foes, Akron Ellet on Thursday night at Younstown and Wheelersburg at Athens on Friday night.  Adena had non and started the wires buzzing.

It all came about because of the ruling that the teams would go to the closest Regional Tournament and won't happen again, everybody hopes and  if the State Tournament is returned to Columbus next year and the Regionals are eliminated.  Class B finals are held at Wittenberg College at Springfield next weekend and the Class A finals will be held at Toledo.  To win the right to compete in the Athens Regional, Strasburg defeated Tuscarawas 47-44 at Zanesville, Wheelersburg defeated New Boston 36-28 at Waverly, Worthing defeated Grove City 50-30 at Westerville and Glenford defeated Corning 57-46 at Logan.

46 - Strasburg Locks-Up 26 Straight 61-50 (3-8-46)

Sophomore Center Clarence Yackey scores 20 points while leading the Strasburg Tigers to a 61-50 victory over the Zanesville St. Thomas Saints.  Yackey has a total of 64 points in tournament play for a 9.3 point per game average.

ZANESVILLE - Rolling over the 2 Muskingum County entries with an offensive power they seemed to be saving for just such a triumph, the Strasburg Tigers and Tuscarawas Broncos won the opening games in the Eastern District Class B Tournament here last night and tonight the 2 collide for the Championship.  Strasburg, one of the few undefeated teams in the State, ran its string to 26 straight wins by sweeping over the Zanesville St. Thomas Saints 61-50 and Tusky overpowered the Frazeysburg Red Raiders 63-47.

Free scoring gave plenty of thrills to the 2,040 paid customers who filled the Municipal Auditorium to watch the 2 Tuscarawas County teams, highly rated as favorites, display their power before an audience inclined to take the 2 teams a little too lightly.  Tonight's game for the Championship between the Tigers and Broncos is to be preceded by a half hour band concert by the Zanesville High School Band.  Doors will open an hour before game time.

Strasburg has 3 victories over Tuscarawas to it's credit, 25-23 and 45-43 in the regular season and a 31-16 triumph 2 weeks ago in the county tournament, but past records won't count too much in this final meeting of the 2 clubs with the District Championship and a trip to theRegional Tournament at Athens next week at stake.  The county fans are here.  Both Strasburg and Tusky are so well represented that the Zane Hotel, where both teams are staying, is almost completely filled up with them.  A walk down the half block to Municipal Auditorium gives the idea that you are either of the 2 towns for an evening.

Last night's contest proved to Muskingum County fans that the caliber of Tuscarawas County basketball is well above the average and they saw their 2 teams swept down the river almost helpless before the offensive power of Strasburg and Tuscarawas.

The Strasburg Tigers (7-0) (26-0) may have had the toughest of the 2 opponents, according to the tourney records, but the Zanesville St. Thomas Saints (16-5) couldn't find enought steam to hold the Strasburg five down.  The Tigers were on and went on and on with basket after basket, outscoring the Irish in the 1st and 3rd quarters by nice margins to command the game early and maintained a margin of at least 5 points all the way.

It was Big Sophomore center Junior Yackey and Senior guard Fred Walton who kept the nets singing for the Bengals.  Yackey, who sometime plays a defensive game, went the other way and scored 20 points for game honors, while Aul was ringing the boards for 18.  Senior guard Joe Deibel got 9, Sophomore forward Tom Haswell 8 and Senior forward John Garver 6 points, respectively.

Head Coach Emmet Riley's club established it's superiority in the 1st quarter by shutting down the St. Thomas defense and piling up an 18-7 lead in the 1st quarter, but the Irish changed to a fast breaking man to man in the 2nd period and cut the margin to just 8 points at halftime with the Tigers leading 30-22.  Strasburg high again in the 3rd stanza to score 18 more points and lead 48-35 going into the final quarter, maintaining at least a 10 point margin throughout.

Both teams scored 21 field goals, but the Tigers were making it's free throw shots, sinking 19 of its 28 tries, while the Saints made only 8 of 21 attempts.  Strasburg lost Aul inthe finalperiod and St. Thomas lost guard Mick Brune.  Forward Gene O'Brien led the Irish with 16 points, sinking 7 field goals, the same number as Yackey and Aul.

Shortly after the game ended a fist fight took place on the auditorium stage, but it was quelled by tournament officials.  No one from Tuscarawas County was involved.

46 - Tusky Cools-Off The Red Raiders 63-47 (3-8-46)

The Frazeysburg Red Raiders 1946 Basketball Team.  FRONT:  Dave Lyman (Manager) - Herb Robinson - Harry Williamson - Jim Michael - Bill Lentz and Cecil Jordan.  BACK:  Bob Blizzard (Manager) - Bob Stokes - Dick Barbee - Paul Blizzard - Ron Conner - Don Stokes and Head Coach Bob Knight.

ZANESVILLE - Head Coach Jim Roger's Tuscarawas Broncos (8-1) (24-3) set the pace for the Strasburg Tigers by cracking the Frazeysburg Red Raiders (15-8) offense effort wide open, the attacks always ending with some Tusky player sending a "sucker" shot through the hoops.  The Raiders were ahead once 7-4 in the 1st quarter, but that was the last time they were to see the lead.  The Broncos swept away to score a cool 20 points a period for the 1st two periods and then 14 and 9 for the final 2 quarters.

Handling the ball in such a manner inside the Red Raiders defense that they might as well have had a handle on it, Tuscarawas led 20-13 at the end of the 1st quarter, 40-22 at intermission and 54-32 at the 3rd stanza.  Seniors forward John Vesco and center Fred Walton rang the bell so many times for the Broncos they tired out in the final half, each getting 12 points in the 1st two periods and adding 6 more in the final half for grand totals of 18 points.  Junior guard Bill Dessecker got 10, Senior guard Jay Herning 8, Senior guard Bob French 5 and Senior forward Rich Donahue 4 points as well.  Herb Robinson led Frazeysburg with 15 markers, while fellow teammate Paul Blizzard scored 10.

Tusky didn't lose a man on fouls, but at one stage in the game it appeared as through Vesco and
Walton might both go.

46 - Both Strasburg And Tusky Leave Friday For Zanesville District

DOVER - The unbeaten Strasburg Tigers and Tuscarawas Broncos, both hot favorites in the Eastern Ohio Class B District Championship finals at Zanesville this weekend will leave tomorrow by private cars and a bus.  Both teams will set up shop in Hotel Zane, near the Zanesville Municipal Auditorium, where both take the boards Friday night in their opening tourney appearance, Tusky will meet Frazeysburg, Muskingum County Consolation Division winner and the Bengals meet the Zanesville St. Thomas Irish.

Head Coach Emmet Riley and his Strasburg cagers will leave at 8AM tomorrow morning in private cars.  Upon arrival they will go to the Auditorium for a brief practice session on the tournament floor in the forenoon.  The Broncos will leave about 1PM tomorrow afternoon by bus.  Tusky schools will close at 11:30AM and a bus will be provided for students who do not have their own private transportation.  Strasburg schools will close down 2 periods early in the afternoon and a bus will be furnished for the students.

The 2 teams are highly favored to sweep the 2 Muskingum County entries out of the tourney Friday night and then meet Saturday night in the Championship final, the winner going to Athens the following week to compete in the Regional Tournament.  If the Tigers and Broncos do meet in the final game Saturday night, it will be the 4th time the 2 teams have met, Strasburg previously winning 3 games from Tuscarawas, 2 regular season contests by 2 points each and the county tournament contest by 15 points.  The Auditorium will open an hour before game time and seats approximately 2,000.

Strasburg, one of the few unbeaten teams in the State and holding a record of 25 straight victories, will meet a small, but fast, Zanesville St. Thomas club with a pair of good shooters, a fast breaking offense and so far "the luck of the Irish".  Head Coach Stan Kinskey of the Saints will probably start Bob Arnold and Gene O'Brien at the forwards, Jerry Dunn at center, Russ Nocera and Mickey Bruns at the guards.

O'Brien is rated an excellent shot from anyplace on the floor and one-handed shots from the corner are his specialty.  Brune, who wears glasses, is small and aggressive, specializing at digging the ball out under the basket and slipping in sucker shots.  The team is small, Dunn's 6-1 being the most height the Tigers will have to contend with, but the fast break, plus plenty of shooting brought St. Thomas up through the Sectional Tournament to a final overtime victory over the West Lafayette Generals.

Head Coach Jim Rogers of Tusky will go against a fast-breaking club and Head Coach Bob Knight will have a height advantage at the center position for his Frazeysburg team since he usually starts Paul Blizzard, 6-3, at that spot.  Other starters are Herb Robinson, Jim Michael, Harry Williamson and Don Stokes.  Frazeysburg is reported as a well-balanced team and all of the starters are lettermen.  Williamson is the only other 6 footer on the starting five.  Blizzard is rated a good defensive man.  The team has no offensive star, as they divide scoring honors rather evenly.

46 - District Tournament Team Statistics

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers with their string of 25 straight victories without a defeat will be carrying with them the best record of any of the 4 teams entered when the Class B District Tournament opens at Zanesville on Friday night.  A statistical check of the records today showed that perhaps the most unspectacular part of theTigers' game is their best asset.

Strasburg does well offensively, scoring an average of 47.4 points per game, but the big difference from other teams is in the defensive department.  There the Tigers have been doing their greatest work and getting in their best licks.  The 25 teams which bucked the Strasburg defense found that out when they scored a point average of 24.2 in each game played against the Bengals.  Twenty-four points doesn't win many ball games and it wasn't enough in any one contest against Strasburg.

Coming right close behind Strasburg is the Tuscarawas Broncos who have scored an average of 51.4 points each of their 26 games, while their opponents were only collecting 31.8 per game.  Included in the Tusky record is a 102-23 victory over the Stone Creek Golden Panthers in the county tournament in Dover, an all-time scoring mark for the event and that gives an indication of the offensive power of the Broncos.

Of the 2 other teams in the tourney, the Zanesville St. Thomas Irish had the best paper record piled up in winning 16 of 20 starts.  The Irish have collected an average of 46.6 points each game, while holding their opponents to 35.7 points a game.  The Irish tied the Philo Electrics and McConnellsville for the Championship of the Muskingum Valley League and then went on to defeat Pennsville 49-41, the Warsaw Eagles 77-41 and the West Lafayette Generals 36-35 in overtime in the Souther Sectional.

The Fraseysburg Red Raiders had a point average per game of 40.4 and their opponents scored 34.2 in administering the 7 defeats in 23 games.  The Red Raiders tied Dresden and the Hopewell Blue Tornadoes for 2nd in the Muskingum County League, then lost to Dresden in the semi-finals of the county tournament winning the Consolation Division entering the Southern Sectional Tournament to knock off the New Concord Little Muskies 44-37 and Zanesville St. Nicholas 49-45.

46 - Strasburg's Adrian "Fizz" Miller Ends Brilliant Cage Career

STRASBURG - One of Strasburg's best athletes wrote finis to a brilliant basketball career when Adrian "Fizz" Miller led his Ohio University Bobcats to a 58-56 upset win over a heavily favored Akron University team a week ago.  Miller pumped 22 points through the hoop to cinch his team's claim as one of the better teams in Ohio this year.  Fizz scored a total of 250 points in 20 games for Head Coach Trautwein's team.  That figures out a neat 12.5 points per day.  Miller was particularly impressive in his team's tougher games.  For instance, he scored 18 points against Kentucky University's great club.  He also scored a bucket in the closing seconds of the game to beat Miami 39-38.

Ohio University finished the season with a record of 15-5.  This was Miller's 3rd season with the Bobcats.  He was a teammate of Frank Baumholtz on Ohio University's national runner-up of 1941 and played with the 1942 club before he was inducted into the Army.  Fizz is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Miller of Strasburg and a brother of Arthur "Dutch" Miller, Strasburg's star of the late twenties.  Fizz played 4 years for Strasburg and was on the 1933 team which participated in the State Tournament.

Miller, who stands 6-2 and wears glasses, graduated from Ohio University in 1942.  He completed his 4 year course in 3 years just before he was inducted in the Army.  He served 3 years, 7 months in the Army Finance Section, one year of which was in the ETO.  After his release from the
Army last fall he reentered Ohio University for a refresher course in accounting.  Fizz was eligible to play basketball this year as he had a year of eligibility left when he graduated.

Miller is expected home from college this weekend and to root for the Strasburg Tigers in their bid for State Class B Honors.  He doesn't intend to follow the coaching profession.  Instead he has already accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Office in Cleveland.  Last week Fizz was surprised with a "Fizz" Miller night by his fraternity and he was presented with a 50 Dollar Bond.

46 - District Basketball Tournament In Zanesville
