30 - Gnaden Scalps Tusky 33-18 (2-28-30)

Gnadenhutten Indians Team Members:  Clark, Guard - Riley, Forward - Kohl, Center - Ames, Guard - Hearing, Forward - Kennedy - C. Fox, Forward - Petry, Guard - E. Fox, Forward - Carson - Head Coach Meade.

DOVER - Hitting the basket from all angles, the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (8-6) had little trouble in disposing the Tuscarawas Broncos (0-1) (0-8) in the final game of the afternoon action.  It was a 15 point massacre.  Gnaden looked unimpressive at the start until #13 Riley and #8 Hearing, 2 classy forwards swung into action.  Clark, #6, played a neat game at guard.

Tusky flashed almost nothing in the way of a passing attack.  Outclassed, they fought an uphill battle from the start.  Junior Glenn Welch, #6 and their center, was their leading scorer with 3 goals and the same number of fouls for a total of 9 points.  Freshman Francis Myers, #5, was banished on personals, while #3 Senior Charles Mathias played a bang-up game at guard.  Riley chalked up 15 points for the Indians, high scorer of the tournament so far.  Hearing made 3 buckets and 2 fouls for another 8 markers.

MEET THE GNADENHUTTEN INDIANS

MR WALTER MEAD - A large part of our basketball success this season is due to Head Coach Mead, whose firmness and serenity did much toward making a good team.  And may we add that "We think you are a good sport and true blue."

EDWIN "FRIZ" RILELY - "Friz" was only a Sophomore, but a fast one and we found a valuable man in him.  He was noted for his shooting.  Much can be expected of "Friz" within the next 2 years.

JACK "JOCKO" HEARING - "Jocko" was one of the best.  He was a steady and consistent player, as well as a constant worry to opposing teams.

DENVER "DENNY" KOHL - "Denny" was one of the hardest-working men on the team.  He filled the center position well and still has one more year to secure the tip-off.

ROBERT "BOB" CLARK - In "Bob," Gnadenhutten had a good guard or forward and judging from the way he threw himself into the game when opportunity offered itself, much can be expected of him next year.

PERRY "WINK" AMES - Head Coach Mead found in "Wink" a man qualified for the guard position.  Big and strong, he had that fighting spirit which is needed in a good guard.

ROBERT "BOB" CARSON - Although small, "Bob" was a dangerous opponent.  What he lacked in stature was more than made up in speed.

PAUL "PUNKIN" ZIMMERMAN - "Punkin," who played his first and last year for the Indians, filled the guard position and was an efficient player.

CLARANCE "FOXY" FOX - "Foxy" played a clean game, always loyal and ever in the interests of good sportsmanship.

ROBERT "BOB" KENNEDY - As a sub, "Bob" played a good game at forward.  He was only a Freshman and you can bet on "Bob" for the next 3 years.

EUGENE "GENE" FOX - "Gene" was handicapped by his size, but as a team man he deserves much credit.

VERNON "PETRY" PETRY - Although handicapped by a late start in basketball, "Petry" developed into a hard worker, always giving his best for the team.

DALE "MIDGET" CLARK - By the abililty and accuracy Dale displayed in winning the County foul shooting trophy at Dover, he has won a highly honored place in this section of the State.  Later he won lthe right to enter the District finals by caging 26 of 30 fouls.  We wish him the greatest success and hope he wins the right to enter the State finals next year.

The Gnadenhutten Indians went on to a 10-6 regular season.  Was 3-0 in the County Tournament, and finished out the year at 0-1 in the Sectional Tournament.
